The short answer

An MCP server is a program that exposes tools and data to an AI assistant through the Model Context Protocol — an open standard originally from Anthropic. Instead of building a custom integration for every AI app, a server speaks MCP once and any compatible client (Claude, Cursor, VS Code agents) can use it: reading files, querying databases, calling APIs. It's USB-C for AI tooling.

AI assistants were brains in jars

Before MCP, every AI assistant integration was a bespoke bridge — Claude couldn't touch your filesystem, your database, or your internal APIs without a custom plugin built for that specific assistant. Every assistant wired tools differently, so a tool built for one didn't work with another. The result: assistants that could explain anything and do almost nothing.

One protocol, every tool, every assistant

MCP standardizes the connection: a server describes what it can do — read files, run queries, call endpoints — and any MCP-compatible assistant can discover and use those capabilities. Build once, work everywhere. The ecosystem now has thousands of servers for databases, browsers, code repos, SaaS APIs, and smart-home gear.

01

Servers expose capabilities

An MCP server advertises tools and resources — 'I can query this database' — through the protocol.

02

Clients consume them

Claude, Cursor, and agent frameworks connect to servers and use the capabilities mid-conversation.

03

Build once, plug everywhere

One server works with every MCP-compatible assistant — no per-assistant plugin rewrites.

FAQ

What is an MCP server in simple terms?

A connector that lets an AI assistant use external tools and data. The assistant asks, the server does — files, databases, APIs — over one shared protocol.

Who created MCP?

Anthropic released the Model Context Protocol as an open standard. It's since been adopted by other assistants and frameworks — it's an ecosystem protocol, not a Claude-only feature.

Do I need to code to use MCP servers?

To install one, mostly just a config entry — Claude Desktop and Cursor accept server configs. To build one, yes — they're code, usually a small program wrapping an API or system.

Where do I find MCP servers?

The official registry, awesome-lists, and directories like OnlyFoundrs that rank them by real usage and verify they're still maintained.
